The tower your wind turbine is installed on is as integral to the performance of a wind system as the wind turbine itself. Without a properly sized tower, your wind turbine will be nothing more than an expensive yard ornament.

The small wind industry has matured greatly over the past 40 years and one of the most important lessons that has been learned is that tall towers make for better performing wind turbines.  In most cases, as the distance above the ground is increased, the windspeed is increased. Higher wind speed means more power. The most common mistake in installing a small wind generartor is putting the turbine on too short of a tower.

There are two main categories of towers: free-standing and guyed.

For small wind systems, a tilt up guy-ed tower is the most economical.  These guided towers are available in a range of sizes from 30' to 100' and can be installed by a minimum of 3 people.

There are small free-stanting towers available as well where space is limited. Southwest Wind Power has a free-standing mono pole available for the Skystream with an adapter for other turbines in heights of 33', 45' and 60'. Whitco towers has a free-standing, hinged tower available as well.
